One of my children is very talkative and friendly, but the other is withdrawn and quiet. I worry about him; how can I get him to talk more?

A. It is not unusual for children in the same family to be quite different from each other. These difference may become noticeable at surprisingly early age. In fact, many experts believe that genes may in part cause this differences in temperament and personality. We are unique individuals from the beginning of our lives.

However, you are right to be concerned if your quite child is more than just different from the outgoing child. Some children do become seriously withdrawn. It is possible that he is shy, and because of this is not fitting in with his sibling and friends. It is also conceivable that your child is depressed – depression can occur at any age. If the problem seems to fall into the shyness or depression category, I suggest that you consider family or individual therapy.
